Biography: Born May 16, 1906 in Quebec city.
Career: One of Pellan's painting was acquired by the National Galery of Canada in 1923. From 1926 to 1940, Pellan lived, painted ans travelled in Europe. In 1937, Fontainbleau's Fine Arts and Museum purchased two of his paintings. In 1940, Pellan returned to Montreal and workedas a teacher at the Fine Arts School of Montreal until 1952. In 1948, he signed the manifesto Prisme d'Yeux, a group of which he was a leader. he represented Canada at the Venice Biennial and at the Interamerican Exhibition of Painting and Engraving, in Mexico City (1958).
A very polyvalent artist, Alfred Pellan has created costumes and decors for many theatrical productions, just as Marc Chagall did. They were in Paris at the same time and their works have quite a lot in common. He has been quite active in large paintings (murales), stained-glass, ceramics and also in original prints. Alfred Pellan is now part of the canadian and the world heritage. His unique imagery and his way to treat colors has given him a unique stance in the world of visual arts. He has been through all schools (cubism, abstraction, surrealism, automatism, symbolism,...but he always remained the sole and unique Alfred Pellan.
He died in 1988.
